Dr Rigamonti's presentation, took place on Wednesday 30th October at Massey University and focussed on three main topics. Generation, sorting and management of municipal waste in Italy; waste management situation at the EU level together with recent trends, emerging issues and challenges; and past and ongoing research activities on waste management and life cycle assessment carried out at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of Politecnico di Milano (DICA-POLIMI).

Lucia Rigamonti is an environmental engineer at Politecnico di Milano. She has research interests in environmental and energy analyses of integrated waste management systems, and currently works on a three year project MatER (Material and Energy from Refuse). Lucia founded the working group DIRE (Development and Improvement of LCA methodology: Research and Exchange of Experiences) as part of the Italian Network on LCA, and is a member of the working group Management and Treatment of Waste of the Italian Network on LCA. She is professor for the university courses Sanitary - Environmental Engineering and Phenomenon of Pollution (Politecnico di Milano, 2012-1013).
